3,400 Greenfield Acres Surrounding Bremerton National Airport, Zoned and Prepped for Development
Examples abound of K-12 school programs in the Kitsap region that are continually developing in support of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). These feed articulated programs in college and other training opportunities in support of the aerospace and defense industry:
Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Challenge: in partnership with the Keyport Naval Undersea Museum, many local schools have used this project (building and operating actual underwater ROV’s) to teach physics, engineering design and other classes.
North Kitsap Schools: An early adopter of pre-engineering (Project Lead the Way) curriculum in middle schools as well as high schools, North Kitsap has served as a lighthouse program in the region.
DOD $2.5 million grant to the Central Kitsap School District. The newest grant will focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) with the goal of improving student achievement in those areas.
Grant funds will provide access to resources and staff development that would otherwise be unavailable.
The centerpiece of the grant is a partnership with the National Flight Academy.
The program will be designed to inspire and engage students in the pursuit of STEM through project‐based learning opportunities and cross‐curricular integration.
A STEM middle school: recognizing the importance of STEM, Bremerton Schools opened West Hills STEM Academy in 2011. West Hills and Bremerton High are multiple STEM grant recipients.
South Kitsap Information Technology: This district was a national and Washington State pilot district for IT education a dozen years ago and a lighthouse for area high school program development.

The articulation of education and training in the Kitsap area, from STEM and pre-engineering in K-12 schools and West Sound Tech, through a rich variety of post-secondary options, supports existing and expanding jobs in the aerospace and defense industry cluster.
